The 2000 season in Mudgee was a wet cool one which saw lower yielding vineyards produce top quality fruit amid testing circumstances.

A wet spring saw excellent vine growth early in the season, however drier conditions prior to Christmas ensured a disease-free flowering and fruit-set period.

A cool but dry Spring and early Summer period saw good ripening conditions. A little rain closer to vintage caused some disease in the vineyard, however the Shiraz was picked cleanly and at full flavour ripeness levels.

The sugar ripeness was 12.5 Be with acid levels of 5.5 grams/litre and a pH of 3.53.

The wine was Ôcold-soakedÕ prior to fermentation. Skin contact post ferment lasted two weeks and after malolactic fermentation the wine was put into new and one year old barriques (70/30) mostly sourced from the French forests of Allier and Nevers. After 18 months the wine was finally blended and bottled with minimal filtration.

The wine is medium-full bodied with liquorice, raspberry and spice characters. The palate is smooth with fine tannin, good fruit weight and a ÔleatheryÕ finish. Like most New World Shiraz wines it is drinking very well now, but has been made to age.
